Honda Adds Google Gemini to Canadian Vehicles: The Full List of Eligible Models and Trims

Honda Canada has started rolling out Google Gemini to vehicles equipped with Google built-in, replacing the Google Assistant software that has handled voice interaction in those cars until now. The company says the assistant is already reachable in thousands of Civics, Accords, Preludes, CR-Vs, Passports and Pilots on Canadian roads.

The distinction worth noting is that this lands in cars already sitting in customers’ driveways rather than being held back for new inventory, which makes it one of the wider in-car software updates Honda has pushed across its Canadian fleet.

Which Hondas actually qualify

Eligibility is set by model year and trim rather than by nameplate, and the list is narrower than the roster of models suggests:

  • Accord Touring Hybrid — 2023 onward
  • Civic Sedan Sport Touring Hybrid — 2025 onward
  • Civic Sedan Si — 2025 onward
  • Civic Hatchback Sport Touring Hybrid — 2025 onward
  • CR-V Touring Hybrid — 2026 onward
  • Pilot — 2026 onward, all trims
  • Passport — 2026 onward, all trims
  • Prelude — 2026 onward, all trims

Drivers have to be signed into a Google Account for the assistant to respond.

A conversation rather than a command

The functional change is that Gemini holds on to what was said a moment earlier. Google Assistant expected fairly rigid phrasing, so a request for a nearby lunch spot had to be framed close to the way the system anticipated. Gemini carries context across several exchanges, which means a driver can ask for a dinner recommendation and then narrow it by mentioning that a toddler is coming along, without restating the original request.

Honda says the system will ask for clarification when a request is ambiguous, can follow layered instructions, and should get better at recognising less literal phrasing over time. The stated aim is keeping hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, which is the standard argument for voice control and the reason the accuracy of the thing matters more in a car than it does on a phone.

“Connected technology has become an important part of the driving experience for Canadian Honda customers,” said Emile Korkor, assistant vice-president of Honda sales and marketing, positioning the update as part of a move toward technology drivers do not have to learn a command vocabulary to use.

Gemini Live reaches past the car

Honda is also switching on Gemini Live, a free-flowing conversation mode a driver opens by saying “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Once it is running it is not confined to vehicle functions. Honda describes it handling trip planning, turning up family-friendly activities, summarising the news, or working through ideas ahead of a meeting.

That is a real shift in what an in-car assistant is for. Navigation, climate and media have been the conventional limits. Gemini Live treats the commute as time that can absorb tasks which would otherwise wait until the driver got to a desk.

What it means for Canadian buyers

The eligibility list deserves a careful read before anyone assumes a particular Honda is covered. Gemini is concentrated in hybrid Touring trims and the newest Pilot, Passport and Prelude. A 2025 Civic Sedan Si qualifies while other Civic trims from the same year do not, so anyone shopping used specifically for this feature should confirm the exact trim rather than trusting the model and year.

What Honda has left unsaid is also worth registering. There is no word on what the experience looks like for a driver who declines to sign into a Google Account, and no detail on how data is handled — an omission that carries more weight now that the assistant is pitched as helping with planning and correspondence rather than just directions.

For owners of an eligible vehicle this arrives as an update to a car they already own, with no cost mentioned, which is a genuine addition rather than a reason to trade up. For shoppers, it is worth checking the trim against the list, but it belongs alongside the usual questions about price, warranty and running costs rather than ahead of them.
