From harnessing vital minerals to constructing vehicles and batteries, Canadian enterprises and their workforce have drawn unprecedented levels of investment aimed at job creation and economic growth while promoting cleaner air. Over the past four years, more than $31 billion has been announced in electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing investments across Canada. Companies are relying on Canada for its unbeatable mix of top-tier talent and reliable partnership.

The world is indeed paying attention.

Today, both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Landry celebrated a pivotal $15 billion investment from Honda Canada, which heralds the creation of Canada’s maiden comprehensive electric vehicle supply chain in Ontario.

This ambitious project will establish four new manufacturing sites in Ontario. Unique in Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s history, an innovative electric vehicle assembly plant will be established alongside a new standalone battery manufacturing facility in Alliston, Ontario. Further enhancing the supply chain, a cathode active material and precursor processing plant will be set up through a joint venture with POSCO Future M Co., Ltd., and a separator plant in collaboration with Asahi Kasei Corporation. Scheduled to be fully operational by 2028, the assembly plant will boast a production capacity of up to 240,000 vehicles annually.

This deep investment will not only create over a thousand high-quality manufacturing roles in Ontario but will also spur thousands more direct and indirect jobs within the province and across Canada, including during the construction stage and through Ontario’s leading auto parts supplier and research and development ecosystems.

The investment eloquently expresses confidence in the abilities of both Canada and Ontario’s workers, their robust economies, and competitive business settings.

Here are some perspectives on this development:

– “Today’s declaration marks a transformative era for manufacturing in Canada. With Honda’s substantial investment reflecting trust in our workforce and sectors, we’re poised to generate high-value jobs, economic growth, and cleaner air.” – A Canadian government official.

– “Honda’s investment substantiates our governmental efforts to revive and empower Ontario’s manufacturing base, bringing about a generation of high-quality union jobs and broad economic benefits across the province. With our wealth of critical minerals and exceptional workforce, Ontario is set to lead the global electric vehicle industry, ensuring better employment and higher wages for our top-class workers.” – An Ontario government representative.

– “With an abundant skilled workforce, necessary raw materials, clean energy, and specialized production capacities, today’s announcement by Honda — its largest in North Africa — capitalizes on these assets for Canadian workers. We are strategically developing our electric vehicle advantage by fostering a comprehensive supply chain ecosystem.” – Another Canadian official.

– “As the global pivot towards sustainable transportation continues, Canada is grabbing the lead, showcasing its conducive business environment. With unmatched workforce skills, clean energy availability, plenty of critical minerals, market access, and a thriving EV ecosystem, Canada is perfect for companies like Honda to expand.” – A business analyst.

– “Long in the making, today’s significant financial commitment by Honda signals trust in Ontario as a top tier producer and innovator in electric vehicles, batteries, and related materials. Our province is diligently constructing a full electric vehicle supply chain, pushing forward advanced technologies that will shape future automotive design while securing numerous quality jobs in Alliston and provincially. Honda’s choice underscores Ontario’s attraction.” – A provincial official.

In Budget 2024, the Canadian government plans to introduce a 10% EV Supply Chain investment tax credit targeting at least three segments of the supply chain, further complementing the existing 30% Clean Technology Manufacturing investment tax credit. With federal and provincial aid possibly reaching up to $5 billion collectively, Honda’s foray into eligible EV supply chain segments stands to significantly benefit. Additional details about Honda’s new facilities in Alliston are expected soon as planning finalizes, ensuring enhanced collaboration between Honda, the Government of Canada, and the Government of Ontario.
