From the management summary of the study: “The transformation of
the entire transport sector towards fossil-free energy sources is a
challenge that cannot be met by the electrification of drive systems alone.
It is therefore essential to realise the CO2 reduction potential of
all energy sources.
In addition to hydrogen, for example, the focus here is primarily on
liquid fuels that can be integrated into the supply infrastructure
without technical modifications.
Renewable fuels – so-called Carbon Neutral Fuels, CNF for short – is
a collective term that includes all fuels that have a lower CO2 value
compared to fossil fuels. This study analyses the substitution
potential of advanced, renewable fuels from biological feedstocks
compared to fossil fuels in all sectors of the EU.

Based on current scientific literature and various scenarios, this
study analyses the availability of advanced feedstocks, the conversion
to renewable fuels and the development of fuel demand in road
transport in the European Union for the target years 2030, 2035 and 2040.”
