Ford Plans to Resume Car Production in India for Export Purposes, Asserts Minister

According to recent statements from a government official, Ford Motor Co. is discussing plans to resume manufacturing vehicles in India, albeit primarily for export purposes. The American automotive giant had previously ceased local production in India during the third quarter of 2021 following accumulated operating losses of more than $2 billion over a decade. This decision marked a significant shift in the company’s strategy in one of the largest automotive markets in the world.

Re-engagement in India suggests a strategic redirection for Ford, focusing on leveraging India as a manufacturing hub for exports rather than concentrating solely on the domestic market. Such a move could potentially benefit from cost-effective manufacturing and skilled labor available in the country.

“Ford is considering the possibility of utilizing their existing facilities in India to restart production, primarily aimed at international markets,” the official disclosed on the condition of anonymity due to not being authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Ford’s previous exit from local production had led to significant restructuring, including nearly 4,000 employees impacted by the closure of its two major plants in Chennai and Sanand. However, the automaker had continued its presence in India through vehicle imports and its substantial engine and technology services sector.

Reacting to this development, industry experts suggest that leveraging India’s manufacturing capabilities could provide Ford with a competitive edge in the global market. “This move could signify a substantial shift in Ford’s global strategy, providing them a cost-efficient base for producing vehicles for export markets,” noted an industry analyst.

Ford’s initiative to restart manufacturing in India for export resonates with the broader industry trend where global automobile giants capitalize on India’s manufacturing prowess to cater to international markets. Companies like Hyundai and Suzuki have successfully implemented similar strategies.

This development is still unfolding, and further details are awaited as discussions continue between Ford executives and Indian authorities. It underscores a pivotal moment for Ford in redefining its global manufacturing strategy and enhancing its footprint in international markets.
