New car taxes in British Columbia
Original AutoMart Canada notes for shoppers in British Columbia. Rates and programs change — confirm with a dealer, insurer, or the provincial government before you buy.
New vehicles delivered in British Columbia are taxed at 12% (GST + PST). That rate applies to the negotiated price plus many taxable fees — not only the advertised MSRP.
GST 5% plus PST 7% on most new vehicles (12% combined).
Federal luxury tax can stack on top for passenger vehicles with a taxable amount of $100,000 or more. Trucks and some commercial configurations follow different rules. Ask the dealer to show the luxury-tax line before you sign.
Lease tax treatment differs from a purchase: you typically pay tax on each payment and on the down payment, not on the full capitalized cost up front. Run both paths in our calculators and confirm with the dealer’s worksheet.
