The latest Mercedes EQ sedans haven’t quite captured our favour, notably the AMG EQE Sedan. This four-door electric marvel accelerates from 0-100 km/h faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera S, emitting only eco-friendly whispers instead of pollution. Despite its impressive speed, it fell short in delivering a compelling driving experience—its brakes were unpredictable and overall handling did not inspire confidence. This sedan model from AMG is an enigma, though its SUV counterpart seems to offer a more balanced performance.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV asks for a $7,500 premium over its sedan sibling, justified by numerous enhancements. It features not only larger wheels but also bespoke steering and suspension setups, rear-axle steering with up to 9.0 degrees of articulation, and an exclusive Off-Road mode. Unlike the sedan that uses traditional anti-roll bars, the SUV benefits from electromechanical active roll stabilization to curb body roll and enhance comfort. It also boasts a slightly extended range of 378 km, surpassing the sedan’s 362 km mark.

The AMG’s sturdy SUV construct compromises some of the agility you’d expect from the sedan, but it considerably counters body roll thanks to modern suspension technology dubbed Active Ride Control. This tech, together with a slightly increased weight, offers greater stability and a reassuring ride quality that feels more attuned to the SUV’s dynamics and elevated centre of gravity. The result is an SUV that’s more measured and less eager to impress with raw pace than its sedan counterpart.

Ultimately, while the EQE SUV is certainly the more balanced proposition between luxury and sportiness, it doesn’t excel in its segment. It is respected for quality but still hesitant in its execution, which might make enthusiasts lean towards more cohesive options in the luxury SUV market. Nonetheless, for those committed to electric innovation and the prestige of the AMG badge, it represents a step forward, combining eco-conscious performance with the understated luxury you expect from Mercedes-AMG.
